WLW 2013 vs Older Lower Proof WLW

Anyone had both yet or seen any comparison reviews? I am trading one to a friend and im wondering if I should give him the higher or lower proof. I love the pre 13s but also love high proof stuff...

My favorite of the WLW's was definitley the 2011 vintage (Hence why I will trade a bottle of 2009, 2010, or 2012 for one!). Here is my ranking of the last couple years:

1. 2011
2. 2010
3. 2009
4. 2013
5. 2012

Having just cracked a bottle of the 13 -- it's pretty spectacular.

I thought the 2013 was a bit hot when I first opened it and it has gotten progressively better the longer it has been open.

Of the 2 I've had recently, 2012 and 2013, I'd take the 2013. If you plan to trade them in the future I'd keep the vintage bottles, if you're going to drink them keep the higher proof. Can't really go wrong either way as I've never had a bad WLW. High proof bottles bring something extra to the table that my palate loves, not to mention a few drops of water (rarely done here) can open new flavors without watering it down too much.

The 13 is still a good pour but for me is hotter and dryer than all the other years I've had

It seems the '06 and '09 WLW are the best

I still haven't tried the 13 but I wound up giving my friend the 13 so I have 2 13s and 2 lower proof versions.

I personally think the 2013 is the best of the years that I have tried. You got to open it and let it breathe though. That tames some of the heat and allows you to taste the complexity. But like everything else, it all depends on the individual. I rate them 2013, 2006, 2009, 2010. I haven't had the pleasure of tracking down the other years.

2013 is easily the worst. Here's how I rank the ones I've had.

2011
2010
2012
2009
2007
2008
2013

I'd have to disagree with it being the worst. I was lucky enough to source 2 bottles, one unfortunately almost empty, but the longer this was open the better it got. I can see why the 2013 WLW came in 2nd whisky in the world in the 2015 bible and THE top bourbon. This turned out to be a classic even though not as old as some of the first releases.

I was really impressed with the '13, but haven't had any before 2012. I don't drink it full proof for the most part, I add some water to cool it, probably to upper 50's, lower 60's%.

I put it in my top 3 whiskies, although I seem to change that list pretty frequently...

Now that Buffalo Trace makes Pappy too, is the 15-year/ 53.5% somewhat WLW-ish?
