Douglas Laing & Co., World Whiskies Awards’ Brand Innovator of the Year 2016, today announces the launch of its first ever “Feis Ile Edition” of Big Peat Islay Malt Scotch Whisky.

In homage to Scotland’s Whisky island, the Big Peat Feis Ile Edition bottle and tube are adorned with Islay’s most notable landmarks. The round church at Bowmore and Port Ellen’s Kildalton Cross feature amongst a collage of travel stamps, in a colourful, hand-drawn design with Big Peat himself at the forefront.

Commenting on the new release, Fred Laing says: “Feis Ile sees Islay truly come alive, attracting Whisky fans from all over the world to this magical, week-long jubilee. We wanted to create packaging that does the Queen of the Hebrides and her Feis Ile Festival justice by creatively bringing together some of the wonderful symbols of the island that Whisky enthusiasts know and love. In true Douglas Laing style, our packaging is fun but the liquid inside remains as serious as ever, and this time he’s bottled at higher strength for an even punchier Big Peat hit.”

In line with the family philosophy, Douglas Laing’s Big Peat Feis Ile Limited Edition is proudly without colouring or chill-filtration, and bottled at high alcohol strength, 48%.

Just 500 bottles of the Feis Ile edition will be produced, each individually numbered. It will be sold on allocation to global distribution partners, as well as during the festival on Islay. 50 bottles are available to pre-order now from Douglas, with a limited edition poster included, and signed by Fred Laing, for good measure.

In further Feis news, Douglas Laing also announce a peaty partnership with Islay Ales. The two family firms have joined forces to create Big Peat Cask Matured Ale; a sweet, smoky and citric ale matured in ex-Big Peat casks and bottled exclusively for sale at the Feis Ile Festival on Islay in May 2016. Douglas Laing’s Single Cask Feis Ile Commemorative Bottling is yet to be confirmed.

Tasting Notes for Big Peat’s Feis Ile Limited Edition:
The nose opens fresh, salty and clean, and develops to malted barley dried over peat. A damp, earthy character that’s immediately punchy. On the palate you’ll detect ashes, sweet tar, beaches and smoking chimneys, followed by a long and lingering finish with salty, tangy liquorice, smoke and yet more bonfire ashes.

Launched in 2009, Big Peat is a remarkable marriage of Malt Whiskies only from the island of Islay. “He” is proudly without colouring or chill-filtration and bottled at high alcohol strength (46%), resulting in a naturally oily spirit that promises an incredible mouth-feel. With Caol Ila spirit bringing sweetness, Bowmore the perfect balance, Ardbeg the medicinal, earthy quality and Port Ellen, a degree of elegance, Big Peat represents all that is Islay in a bottle.

Established over 65 years ago, Douglas Laing & Co. is a leading creator and purveyor of the finest Scotch Whiskies, specialising in Single Cask Single Malts and Small Batch Malt Scotch Whiskies. The company was founded by Fred Douglas Laing in 1948 and is still owned and run by the Laing family – Fred Laing Jr and his daughter Cara Laing.

The Remarkable Regional Malts brand encompasses Timorous Beastie (Highlands), Scallywag (Speyside), Rock Oyster (Islands), and Big Peat from Islay, collectively offering the consumer The Ultimate Distillation of Scotland’s Malt Whisky Regions. The family firm also proudly bottles and markets its Exceptional Single Casks range, which includes the recently rebranded Provenance, as well as the firm’s flagship Old Particular and Xtra Old Particular, the “family jewels”.

For those of you who have had Big Peat - feel free to post photos and your feedback or review here! Cheers!

Also, just a side note, it looks like Big Peat Feis Ile 2016 is sold out - however - at this time, samples are still available HERE!

Did you know? There were only 500 bottles produced in honor of the Feis Ile 2016 Festival.
