Default New Member Seeking Thoughts

Trying to determine whether to purchase Glenlivet 21 Archive; Macallan 17 Fine Oak, Glenrothes 1988. Any ideas?

Have already purchased Balvenie 21 Port that has been reviewed here, and I enjoy that immensely.

Also have son-in-law that want to try Scotches. I am thinking about Glenroathes Select Reserve for one, Glengoyne 17 for another and between Bruidladdich Rocks Islay or Dalwhinnie 15 for the 3rd. But if you have any other thoughts I would be open to them.

Thanks to all in advance...Tim

Dig just a little bit deeper into that wallet and seek out the Balvenie TUN 1401. It's only slightly more than the 21 you bought and it is the best Balvenie of the bunch.

Whilst I agree that Tun 1401 is stunning, each batch is very different from the next. I understand batch 9 has been released in the US recently and I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed with it.

Are you located in the US?

I don't know if you guy can get it but as a big fan of Balvenie Portwood I also like the much much cheaper Fettercirn Fasque. It's rich with a nutty, chocolaty taste and is an absolute steal here at around 40 a bottle (less than $75)

Despite being the bigger sister distillery of Balvenie, I find almost all Glenfiddich whisky to be very over rated. Each to their own though. You can't go wrong with Macallan and I understand their Fine Oak range is discontinued so that'd worth snapping up for sure.

Enjoy.

I don't care for the Macallan Fine Oak series at all. In fact, I think Macallan is an overhyped whisky that is way too expensive. The Macallan 18yr is a good whisky, but ridiculously priced at $150+.

If you like Balvenie 21yr Portwood, then I would recommend the Glenrothes 1988. Locally, I found a bottle for $199. That's pretty steep, but the whisky in the bottle is a superb product. The Select Reserve is a decent dram, but compared to the vintages, it falls short.

My favorite Glenlivet is the 16yr Nadurra. It is flavorful and delicious! The 18yr is decent, but boring. The 15yr French Oak is interesting, very drinkable, but nothing to write home about. I have not had the 21yr.

Dalwhinnie 15yr is REALLY subtle, and can get lost very easily. Nice dram.

For my recommendation, check out Dalmore 15yr. It is a great whisky at a good price. It is very flavorful with nice sherry notes and a rich palette.

I have the Glenlivet 21 archive and I love it. Can not speak for the others.
I like it more than Macallan 18.
