Viewer's Comments about Benromach

Benromach Distillery Company was founded in 1898 by Duncan MacCallum of Glen Nevis Distillery. Right from the very start, there where obstacles. The building of Benromach was set for completion at the end of 1898, however the timing was unfortunate as a major depression hit the Scotch whisky industry. F.W. Brickmann - a whisky broker and original partner - had to withdraw the following year due to financial troubles and MacCallum had difficulty finding buyers for his product. Over the next 50 years, the distillery changed hands several times before coming under the new ownership of Scottish Malt Distillers. It operated for another 30 years until it closed its doors on March 24, 1983.

Ten years later in 1993, Gordon and MacPhail bought the Benromach Distillery. As the next few years passed, planning was well underway for the distillery's revival. A major ovehaul was in process and the distillery was re-equipped with specially designed and commissioned new stills, a mash tun, and remoulded wash backs.

In 1998 and nearly 100 years after Benromach's first distillation, production resumed once again at the distillery. It was officially reopened by H.R.H. Prince of Wales on October 15, 1998 and it was no surprise to see guests and visitors from all over the world in attendance of this grand opening ceremony. Prince Charles was offered a tasting of special centenary bottling of Benromach. There were only 3500 bottles of this limited edition worldwide.

More good news was to follow...In 1999, the Malt Whisky Center opened its doors and welcomed visitors from all over the world. And in 2004, Benromach Traditional Single Malt Scotch Whisky was launched. This is the first whisky distilled after the reopening in 1998 and it's the first whisky distilled by Gordon and MacPhail.
