Viewer's Comments about The Macallan

For 300 years the Easter Elchies House, spiritual home of The Macallan, has stood on the banks of the Spey as a symbol of Scottish fortitude, a monument against the ravages of time. Dating from 1700, the Jacobean Manor is the same house that is depicted on The Macallan's packaging. Outside Easter Elchies House, a holly tree flourishes. Amazingly this tree dates back to the earliest days of the house.

"Elchies" sounds as if it should derive from the same Gaelic root as the dividing, flinty or windy bit of Craigellachie, and there are historians who say that is the case. However, Mr Matheson has a different idea, which really appeals to us. He maintained that "it is one of the few words of Basque origin left in this country" and translated it as "el" - a town or residence and "che" - a hill. Thus, the residence on the hill.

Not far from the house lies a small, walled graveyard. This graveyard remains from the days when there was a church on the site - the church was destroyed by fire during the 15th Century and was never rebuilt. In addition to the church, we know that there was a farm and a mill on the Easter Elchies Estate and it would have been on the farm that whisky making first started on this site.

Farming still continues on the estate, indeed, in late summer the fields around Easter Elchies grow rich and golden with their own harvest. Golden Promise Barley, one of the vital ingredients in the creation of our spirit, continues to be grown on Macallan land to this day.

I have been an "Oban guy" for the last 3-4 years, and before that, Lagavullin 16. But as I have started to expand my tastes, I just bought the 12 for the first time and it is now at the top of my list. The sherry undertones make it really rich, it's nicely balanced and complex with a lengthy finish. I am looking forward to the 15 and 17 Fine Oak versions.

The 10 year old is a very nice, light scotch with a mild taste that is still distinctively Macallan. Very nice, good for a relaxing drink after work or to warm you up on the golf course while you wait for the fairway to clear. I tried it at a Macallan tasting event in Houston and liked it better than the others except for the 18 year old.

A friend gave me what was left of a bottle of Macallan with a very distinctive label. It says MACALLAN and then on the next line, THE 1874 followed by (in italics) Pure Highland Malt Scotch Whisky. Then it says selected by whisky maker F.A. Newlands at the Macallan Distillery Graigellachie Scotland. The bottle is a dark green and the label is tan with the above words in black. I was unable to find any reference to this particular brand of Macallan or of it's age. It is wonderful!! Can you shed some light on this?

As an ADVOCATE of Macallans i no longer receive Missionary Mac letters and am out of touch with developments, where can i buy 12 year old Elegancia?

Go and do the "Precious Tour", it is by far the best Distillery tour in scotland and very informative. My wife and i lucked out on our visit to scotland not knowing you need to book and only just got in- what a miss that would have been!!

The nose rather remins me of a barbershop, a rich slightly sweet quality. The body I think is rather thin however, not altogeher friendly compared to a blended Scotch....lacks a little depth but has a velvety touch to it nonetheless. Nice finish though...warm not too hot slightest hint of botters.

My wife took me to Vegas for my birthday and we stopped at the Rhumbar in the Mirage for a quick drink. I ordered a Macallan 12 Fine Oak but after chatting with the bartender, a Scotch drinker himself, he talked me into trying the 15 instead. I was glad he did. Sipped on many through the night, but then he ruined it for me. He gave me a 3/4 pour "sample" of the 30 yr, and it was indescribable. My wife and I shared it, and made it last as long as we could. Absolutely perfect.
