Coming through Minneapolis need advice.

Will be driving through Minneapolis in a couple weeks,
This is my get list so far at Total Wine:

Balvenie Single Barrel 12 $56
Springbank 10 $48
Old Pulteney 12 $39.50 (40%?)
Compass Box The Peat Monster $48
Laphroaig 10 $38.50 @ Total Wine

Of course I'll be stopping at Morelli's too.

Some confusion on the Old Pulteney's ABV. If it's only 40% I won't buy it.
Is the Compass Box The Peat Monster worth bothering with for $48? (I can get 2 Springbank 10s if the Peat Monster isn't that good). Is there a different selection from Compass Box I should consider getting?

Bill, I liked the Peat Monster but to me it always strikes me that I'm drinking Ardbeg 10 in a different bottle and for a higher price. When the bottle I have now is gone I won't be replacing it.

I hope you'll be picking up some Balvenie Single Barrel 15 to go along with the 12. It's still one of my favorites, as is the Doublewood 17.

North Carolina ABC lists Old Pulteney at 43%, so maybe that's what you'll find.

Minnesota is definitely a "whisky friendly" state; Pulteney is $49 here in NC, and in Total Wine in South Carolina. Springbank 10 is $69.

Doesn't look like the Single Barrel 15 is in the line up for "all" the Total Wine stores in the Minneapolis area. I'll bet the DW 17 is good but too spendy for my purse @ $140.
Sounds like I should just get 2 Springbank 10s and skip the Peat Monster. I know I like that one.

I've run into that confusion before with other whiskies. Seems the products sold in Britain are 40% abv and a 70 cl bottle while here in the states it's 43% and 75 cl bottle.

I think the state liquor tax is added on when you buy which brings the sales tax on booze there to 10% but still a very good buy.

From what I read the Old Pulteney is a soft, light bodied malt but for the price I mentioned I'd like to try it.

Yeah, for Peat Monster, just buy Ardbeg 10 for less $$. Hopefully I'll get a chance to bring by the 15 and 17 both.

The Old Pulteney 12 is cheap enough that even if it doesn't land on your favorites list, it's worth giving a try. Old Pulteney 17 is a whole different story and very enjoyable if you can find it.
